Harwell Target Shooting Club is a competitive and inclusive club dedicated to helping shooters of all levels improve their skills. We offer coaching, competitions, and support across multiple disciplines in both smallbore and fullbore target shooting.

What We Shoot

Smallbore Prone

Smallbore prone rifle shooting involves shooting at paper targets at 20 yards, 50 metres, and 100 yards while lying in the prone position. We use .22 calibre rifles and compete year-round. Our members take part in summer and winter leagues organised by the Oxfordshire Rifle Association and the Time Limit League from the Middlesex Smallbore Association.

Lightweight Sporting Rifle

Lightweight Sporting Rifle (LSR) is a standing unsupported discipline, shot at 20 yards and 25 metres with lightweight .22 calibre rifles. It focuses on precision and control without the aid of slings or rests. LSR is ideal for those looking to improve their technique and balance and is a great introduction to competitive shooting.

Gallery Rifle

Gallery Rifle is a dynamic shooting discipline using pistol-calibre rifles at short ranges (typically 20 to 50 metres). Events test both precision and speed, and we shoot under NRA UK rules. It’s an engaging and accessible discipline suitable for all skill levels.

Mini McQueens

Based on the fullbore McQueens competition, Mini McQueens is a fun and fast-paced discipline shot with .22 calibre rifles from a bench at 50 metres. Shooters engage a scaled-down silhouette target that appears for a limited time, testing speed, accuracy, and reaction time. Harwell is currently building an electronic version of this course of fire.

Benchrest

Benchrest shooting is a precision-focused discipline where shooters fire from a seated position at a bench using a supported rifle. We shoot at 20 yards, 50 metres, and 100 yards during the summer season. This style is ideal for those who enjoy technical accuracy and small group sizes in calm, controlled shooting conditions.

Fullbore at Bisley

Our fullbore section shoots once a month at the historic Bisley ranges, participating in a variety of disciplines including Target Rifle, F-Class (FTR), and Historic Rifle. Target Rifle is a traditional discipline using iron sights and precise marksmanship at distances between 300 and 1000 yards. F-Class allows for telescopic sights and rests, focusing on extreme accuracy at long range. Historic Rifle involves classic military-style rifles, offering both a historical and competitive shooting experience. We also take part in local fullbore competitions held at the Otmoor Range in Oxfordshire.
