What Equipment is Used?

Smallbore prone rifle shooting is a precision discipline shot with .22 calibre rimfire rifles while lying in the prone position. It’s an excellent entry point to the world of target shooting, known for its emphasis on control, accuracy, and consistency.

  • Rifle: .22LR single-shot target rifle (e.g., Anschütz or Walther)
  • Sights: Aperture sights or scopes for precision aiming
  • Shooting Jacket and Sling: For stability and support
  • Shooting Mat: For comfort and consistent body position
  • Shooting Glove: Worn on the non-trigger hand for comfort and grip
  • Spotting Scope and Stand: Used to observe shot placement on distant target

Targets and Distances

Shooting is typically done at 20 yards, 50 metres, or 100 yards. NSRA-style targets are used, featuring concentric scoring rings. Competitors aim for the center (bullseye), with 10s scored at the smallest inner ring.

Getting Started

New members are welcome to try the sport using club equipment. We offer informal coaching, range safety guidance, and a friendly environment to build your skills. All you need is interest and enthusiasm — everything else we can provide!

Club Competitions

At Harwell Target Shooting Club, we actively take part in both individual and team-based competitions throughout the year. Members can compete in:

  • The Oxfordshire Rifle Association summer and winter leagues
  • The Middlesex Smallbore Association’s Time Limit League
  • Friendly shoulder-to-shoulder matches with other clubs
  • Local open competitions in Oxfordshire and the surrounding area
  • The Wright Cup — an Oxfordshire competition for .22 rifles at 200 yards
